Royals Open GSAC Play With Wire to Wire Win Over Oaks

Fullerton, CA - The Hope International University men's basketball team (2-1) opened up GSAC play with a wire to wire 84-74 win over Menlo College on Thursday evening in the Darling Pavilion.

The Royals got off to a good start as they took an early 10-2 lead led by back to back threes from Charles Neal to start the game.The Oaks came right back though as they got within three but a layup by Neal increased the Royals lead back to 16-11 midway through the first quarter. The Oaks managed to get within one at 21-20 with six minutes left but the Royals answered with five straight points led by a clutch three point play by Sebastian Castro as they took a 26-20 lead. The Royals then stretched their lead out to 10 on a big three from Jalani Horn but the Oaks scored the last four points of the quarter as the Royals went into halftime up 38-32.

The Royals started the third quarter with a quick layup and one from Horn but the Oaks came right back to get within two at 43-41. The Royals though had all the answers as they extended their lead back to ten at 54-44 off a clutch three from big man Teddy Ochieng. The Oaks didn't go away though as they responded with a 14-4 run to pull within 59-58 with 9:35 left. The Royals responded well as Neal hit two free throws followed by another big three from Horn after the Oaks had got close again to stretch the lead back out to four. The Oaks continued to pressure the Royals as they made it 69-66 with four and half minutes left but again the Royals had an answer as they went on a 7-0 run to take a 76-66 lead with 1:27 left. The Oaks then closed out the game with several late free throws as they prevailed 84-74. Horn led the Royals with 25 points while Neal added 22.

The Royals continue GSAC play at home as they take on William Jessup on Saturday, November 19 at 2:00 PM in the Darling Pavilion.
