Fullerton, CA – The Hope International University softball team (9-1) ran their win streak to seven games as they took down the British Columbia Thunderbirds 4-2 and then came from behind to defeat the La Sierra Golden Eagles 13-5 on Tuesday at Bastanchury Park in Fullerton, CA.
Game 1:
Allie Puente (5-0) picked up the victory as she threw a complete game pitching seven innings allowing two runs one earned on four hits while striking out 10.
Makenna O'Toole led the Royals offense going 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third when the Royals got on the board. With two on and nobody out the Royals took advantage of an error as Alena De La Torre reached on a fielder's choice before an error allowed the runner to score as they took a 1-0 lead. O'Toole then delivered a two out two run double to increas the Royals lead to 3-0. The Royals then added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth as De La Torre lined a two out RBI single to right to make it 4-0.
The Thunderbirds though didn't give in easily as they got to Allie Puente making it 4-1 in the top of the fifth ending a streak of 29 shutout innings by Royals pitching. The Thunderbirds would then add another run in the sixth as they made it a game at 4-2. After letting up a one out double in the top of the seventh Puente struck out the final two batters as the Royals emerged with the victory.
Game 2:
Olivia Candelas got the start and pitched 3 innings while allowing five runs, three earned on eight hits while striking out one and walking one.
Grace Craig (1-0) picked up the win in relief pitching 3 hitless innings.
Makenna Stuart led the Royals offense going 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs.
The Golden Eagles took advantage of a few Royals errors in the first as they took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first. That lead didn't last long as the Royals struck right back. The Royals put two on and one out and then scored on an error followed by a bases loaded walk to cut the lead to 3-2. A wild pitch then tied the game at 3-3 before Marissa Hernandez delivered an RBI groundout to put the Royals ahead 4-3. Kaylee Vazquez then ripped a single to right to increase the Royals lead to 5-3. The Royals would then add two more runs in the bottom of the second on a sac fly by Makenna O'Toole and then a wild pitch as they took a 7-3 lead.
The Golden Eagles didn't go away easily as they pulled back two runs in the top of the third to make it 7-5. On the other side Craig came in from the bullpen and shutdown the Golden Eagles pitching three scoreless innings. Meanwhile the Royals added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs Makenna Stuart ripped an RBI triple into the left field corner to make it 8-5. Jaylyn Hernandez then followed with a double to left center to make it 9-5. The Royals weren't done as Emma McCraw lined an RBI single to left to increase the lead to 10-5.
The Royals made sure the game would end early as they struck for three more runs in the sixth. With runners on second and third and one out Hernandez delivered a sac fly to make it 11-5. Then O'Toole lined a single past the third baseman that allowed both runners to score on throw as the Royals won 13-5 in six innings.
The Royals continue action as they travel to Riverside, CA to take on La Sierra in a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 AM.
