Royals Let Lead Slip Fall To Mustangs

Santa Clarita, CA – The Hope International University baseball team (17-6, 7-4 GSAC) dropped a doubleheader to The Master's University Mustangs 2-1 and 11-9 on Saturday afternoon in Santa Clarita, CA.

Game 1:
Hector Garcia got the start and pitched 6 innings allowing just one run on five hits while walking one and striking out seven. David Rudd-Grow took the loss allowing just one hit to the final batter of the ninth. Branden Chung-Ming led the Royals offense with one RBI.

It was a pitcher's duel throughout as neither team were able to muster much offense with the Mustangs opening the scoring in the bottom of the second on a homerun. The score would stay that way until the top of the sixth when the Royals tied the game on a fielder's choice by Chung-Ming to make it 1-1.

The Mustangs had the best chance to end it in the bottom of the ninth as they loaded the bases with two outs but Steven Ordorica came up big with a strikeout to end the inning and send it to extras. The Royals couldn't get anything going in the 10th while the Mustangs weren't to be denied as they scored in the bottom half as the Royals fell 2-1.

Game 2:
Matthew Pinal got the start and pitched three innings allowing three runs, two earned on two hits while striking out four and walking one. Ryan Lachemann took the loss pitching one inning allowing six runs on four hits while walking one and striking out one. Max Jung-Goldberg led the Royals offense going 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs including two home runs.

After being held to one run in the first game the Royals offense came to life in the top of the first as Robert Mattei crushed a three run home run with two outs to put the Royals up 3-0. Their lead wouldn't last long though as the Mustangs answered with three in the bottom half to tie it 3-3.

The Royals would retake the lead in the top of the third as Jung-Goldberg crushed a solo home run with two outs to make it 4-3. The Royals then added to their lead in the top of the fourth as they scored on back to back bases loaded walks to go up 6-3. The Mustangs didn't go away as they got a run in the bottom half to make it 6-4. The Royals though reestablished their three run lead on a sac fly by Pinal in the top of the fifth to make it 7-4.

The Royals ran into trouble in the bottom half as the Mustangs struck for seven runs to take an 11-7 lead. The Royals didn't give up though as Jung-Godberg hit his second home run of the day, a two run shot to make it 11-9 in the top of the sixth but the Royals couldn't find anymore runs as they fell 11-9.

The Royals continue action on the road as they travel to San Marcos, CA to take on the University of Saint Katherine on Tuesday, May 21 at 1:00 PM.
