Royals Fall to Lions to Start GSAC Play

Costa Mesa, CA – The Hope International University softball team (12-4, 0-2 GSAC) dropped a doubleheader against the Vanguard University Lions losing 2-0 and 11-1 on Tuesday afternoon in Costa Mesa, CA

Game 1:
Allie Puente (7-1) picked up the loss throwing 6 innings while allowing two runs, one earned on three hits while walking one and striking out 12.

It was a pitcher's duel throughout as Allie Puente took a no-hitter into the fifth, but the Royals offense was also unable to generate anything as the game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth. The Lions were the ones who opened the scoring as they took advantage of an error to make it 1-0.

The Royals were unable to break through in the top of the sixth and then the Lions tacked on another run in the bottom half as the Royals trailed 2-0 going into the seventh. The Royals got back to back singles with two outs as they looked to start a rally but were unsuccessful as they fell 2-0.

Game 2:
Olivia Candelas (4-3) took the loss pitching 2 2/3 innings allowing seven runs, six earned on eight hits while walking two and striking out two. Nikki Marquez led the Royals offense going 1-for-1 with an RBI.

It was a scoreless game until the bottom of the third when the Lions put up eight runs to take an 8-0 lead. The Royals fought back in the top of the fourth as they got a run back to make it 8-1. The Lions though scored another three in the bottom of the fourth as they went on to win 11-1.

The Royals continue action at home in non-conference action as they host the University of Saint Katherine on Friday, March 10 with a double header beginning at 12:00 PM.
