Allie Puente Perfect in First Game As Royals Split With Pioneers

Lancaster, CA – The Hope International University softball team (27-7) split a doubleheader with the University of Antelope Valley Pioneers on Tuesday afternoon as they won the first game 7-0 and lost the second 8-5 in 11 innings in Lancaster, CA.

Game 1:
Allie Puente (19-1) was perfect as she picked up the win throwing a complete game seven innings while striking out 17. Makenna O'Toole led the Royals offense going 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs.

The Royals jumped on top early as an RBI groundout by Emily Puente put them up 1-0 in the first. The Royals then added to their lead in the second as Makenna Stuart delivered a two out RBI single to make it 2-0. After Allie Puente struck out eight of the first nine batters she faced the Royals added two more runs in the top of the fourth on an error and hit batter to push their lead to 4-0.

Allie continued to deal from the mound as she was perfect throughout not walking anyone or allowing a hit. Meanwhile the Royals tacked on three more in the top of the seventh on a three run home run by O'Toole as they went on to win 7-0.

Game 2:
Grace Craig got the start and pitched 4 innings allowing three runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out one. Allie Puente (19-2) took the loss in relief pitching 5 1/3 innings allowing three runs, two earned on four hits while striking out nine. O'Toole led the Royals offense for 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs.

The Royals quickly got on the board in the first on a sacrific fly by O'Toole to make it 1-0. That lead wouldn't last long though as the Pioneers tied it 1-1 in the bottom of the first. The Pioneers would then get two runs in the bottom of the second to take a 3-1 lead. Meanwhile the Royals were unable to answer over the first five innings.

The Pioneers then extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth with two more runs to take a 5-1 lead. The Royals though finally staged a rally in the top of the sixth. With one on and two outs the Royals took advantage of an error to make it 5-2. After another error Marissa Hernandez ripped a two run double to make it 5-4. The Royals then tied the game in the top of the seventh as O'Toole came through with a clutch one out RBI single to make it 5-5.

Allie Puente then came into the game in relief and got out of allowing a leadoff single in the bottom of the seventh as she struck out three Pioneers as the game remained 5-5. The Royals searched for the go ahead run but were unsuccessful as the Pioneers finally broke through against Allie in the bottom of the 11th as the Royals fell 8-5.

The Royals return to action on the road as they travel to Northern California for a big matchup against Jessup on Friday, April 14 with a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 PM in Rocklin, CA.
