Puente Sisters Lead Royals To NAIA Opening Round Win Over No. 19 Tigers

Box Score San Antonio, TX – The No. 23 Hope International University softball team (40-14) opened up play at the NAIA Opening Round with a hard fought rain delayed 1-0 victory over the third seeded and No. 19 ranked Campbellsville University Tigers (31-16) on Monday afternoon in San Antonio, TX.

Allie Puente (29-3) picked up the victory throwing a complete game two hitter pitching 7 innings while striking out 12. Emily Puente led the Royals offense going 2-for-3 with the game winning home run.

The game was supposed to begin at 9:00 AM PT but was pushed back to a 1:00 PM PT start time due to rain. At long last the wait ended and the game got underway with another classic pitcher's duel as Allie Puente started out by striking out five of the first six batters she faced including striking out the side in the second. The Tigers would pick up the first hit in the third and after a sac bunt moved the runner into scoring position Allie ended the threat by inducing a flyout to end the inning.

The game continued scoreless with neither team threatening until Emily Puente launched a one out solo home run to left field, her ninth of the year to put the Royals up 1-0. That's all the offense they would need as Allie then put the Tigers down in order in the top of the seventh including striking out the final two batters of the game to help seal the Royals 1-0 win.

With the win the Royals continue play at the NAIA opening round on Tuesday, May 16 at 9:00 AM PT against the winner of No. 1 Our Lady of the Lake vs No. 4 Taylor.
