No. 2 Saints End Royals World Series Hopes

San Antonio, TX – The No. 23 Hope International University softball team (41-16) fell out of the NAIA Opening Round as they lost back to back games 2-0 to the top seeded hosts and No. 2 ranked Our Lady of the Lake Saints (51-6) on Wednesday afternoon in San Antonio, TX.

Game 1:
Allie Puente (30-4) took the loss pitching 6 1/3 innings allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out one and walking one.

The Royals started off the game knowing they needed just one win to advance to their first NAIA World Series but the Saints had other ideas. The game started off similar to the last ones as it was a pitcher's duel throughout. It would be the Saints who got the first hit in the second inning but Allie came back to snuff out the threat.

The game then remained scoreless until the Saints finally broke with two outs in the top of the fourth to take a 1-0 lead. The Royals offense tried to find the tying run but were unable to breakthrough while the Saints added another in the sixth inning as they went on to win 2-0 and force a second game.

Game 2:
Allie Puente (30-5) got the start and took the loss pitching a complete game 7 innings allowing two runs on three hits while striking out two.

The Royals best chance came in the first inning as a one out single followed by a stolen base put a runner in scoring position but the Royals were unable to cash in as the game remained scoreless. The Saints then broke through in the bottom of the third as they took a 2-0 lead.

The Royals didn't give up and continued to fight as they got a leadoff single in the top of the fourth but once again they were unable to capitalize as they continued to trail. They had one more opportunity in the seventh but were unable to take advantage of a Saints error as they fell 2-0.

With the losses the Royals season comes to an end.
