Fullerton, CA - The Hope International University women's soccer team (4-1) won their fourth game in a row and earned their third straight shutout with a 2-0 win over the Midland University Warriors on Friday evening at OC Great Park Field 18 in Irvine, CA.
Like their previous games the Royals dominated from the outset as they created six scoring opportunities in just the first 15 minutes.
Christiane Sundstrom had multiple chances in the first half but could not get one past the Warriors goalie as the Royals put six shots on target. The Royals had another big chance right before halftime but a shot by
Ashlyn Edwards hit the post. On the defensive side the Royals were solid as they allowed just three shots with goalie
Haley Slouka only needing to record one save in the first half as the teams went into halftime knotted up 0-0.
Out of the break the Royals continued to pile on the pressure as they looked for the opener getting off five shots in the opening minutes before finding the breakthrough. It came when Edwards played Sundstrom in on goal who calmly finished past the Warriors goalie to put the Royals up 1-0 in the 49th minute. The Royals continued to press forward after the goal allowing the Warriors to generate some counterattacking opportunities but the Royals defense and Slouka were up to the task to keep the Warriors off the board. Meanwhile the Royals found another goal as
Pressley Honeycutt won a tackle at midfield that Sundstrom raced onto and then passed off to
Ryley Candelario who put it home in the 79th minute as the Royals went on to win 2-0. Slouka earned her third shutout in a row while recording four saves.
The Royals return to action on Thursday, September 9th at 2:00 PM as they begin a two game road trip in Caldwell, ID first taking on Eastern Oregon.
