Royals Drop Third in a Row Fall to Eagles 3-1

Fullerton, CA - The Hope International women's volleyball team (10-9, 4-5 GSAC) fought hard but fell 3-1 to the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Arizona Eagles on Saturday afternoon at home in the Darling Pavilion.

The Royals got off to a great start as they opened on a 6-1 run before going on to take an 11-4 advantage led by three kills from Savannah Salter. The Eagles rallied to make it 19-17 but the Royals held strong getting a kill by Rachel Holmberg as they extended their lead to 21-17. The Eagles kept coming though as they closed out the set on an 8-2 run to win 25-23 and take a 1-0 lead. The Eagles continued their momentum into the second set as they took a 10-4 advantage. The Royals didn't give up as they came storming back on an 11-3 run with big kills from Salter, Lauren Cummings and Addie Mathias to take a 15-13 lead. This time the Eagles would rally as they went back up 19-17 but the Royals would regroup after a timeout with a 5-0 run finished off by a kill from Cummings as they retook a 22-19 lead. The Eagles weren't done either as they came back to force extra points but the Royals answered with a kill by Holmberg and an ace by Annie Nugent to win 26-24 and tie the game 1-1.

The Royals looked to continue their momentum into the third set but the Eagles had other ideas as they raced out to an 11-6 advantage. The Royals answered with back to back kills from Cassidy Koffroth and Salter to make it 11-8 but the Eagles answered to go up 15-8. The Royals tried to regroup after a timeout but they were unable to mount a comeback as they fell 25-14 and trailed 2-1. The Eagles continued their momentum into the fourth set as they jumped out to a 9-6 lead. The Royals quickly rallied to go up 10-9 with a bill kill by Cummings but once again the Eagles retook a 15-13 advantage. The Royals weren't about to go down easily as they answered on a 5-0 run with kills from Yale Spoja and Cassidy Koffroth to retake an 18-15 lead. The Eagles regrouped after a timeout and came right back to go up 19-18. The Royals fought to stay alive as a kill by Spoja tied it again but the Eagles were too much as the Royals fell 25-20 and 3-1. Koffroth and Salter led the Royals with 10 kills each while Stacey Dawes led with 18 assists and Annie Nugent with 15 digs.

The Royals continue GSAC action on the road as they head back to Arizona to take on Park-Gilbert on Friday, October 25 at 6:00 PM in Gilbert, AZ.
