Royals Season Ends in Heartbreaking PK Loss in NAIA Opening Round

Caldwell, ID - The No. 23 Hope International women's soccer team's (14-4-2) season came to an end as they fell 7-6 in a heartbreaking penalty shootout to the Westcliff University Warriors after the game ended goalless in regulation in the NAIA Opening Round on Thursday afternoon in Caldwell, ID.

The Royals started off on the front foot as they outshot the Warriors 10-3 in the first half. Alyssa Rubio had an early chance in the first half but her shot was saved. Ryley Candelario and Annie Holst also put two shots on target but neither were able to convert as the Royals couldn't break through in the first half. Royals goalie Haley Slouka also came up with two saves to keep the Warriors off the board as the game was goalless at halftime.

The Royals continued to push for the opener in the second half and came close in the 55th minute as Pressley Honeycutt drilled the crossbar. The Royals dominated the second half as they held the Warriors without a shot on target but the offense was unable to breakthrough as Annie Holst hit the post and Kailie Aguilar had her shot saved as the game headed to overtime after 90 minutes of goalless action.

It was a similar story in overtime as the Royals had the better chances but still couldn't come up with a goal as the game headed to a shootout. The Royals then fell in a heartbreak as the first six penalty takers converted before the final one hit over as the Royals fell 7-6. Slouka played all 110 minutes in goal and had four saves.
