Magrann's Bat, Tostado's Walk Off Blast Leads Royals to Sweep of Spirit

Fullerton, CA – The No. 11 Hope International University baseball team (8-6) bounced back from their opening day loss as they swept the Ottawa University Arizona Spirit winning the first game 12-3 before walking off to an 8-6 victory in game two on Saturday afternoon at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.

Game 1:
Josh Landry got the start and pitched 4 shutout innings allowing just three hits while walking one striking out seven. Sakemi Sato (1-0) picked up his first win in relief pitching 1 2/3 innings allowing two runs on two hits while walking three and striking out one. Gunnar Magrann led the Royals offense going 2-for-3 with two home runs and 7 RBI.

Landry put the Spirit down in order to get things started before the Royals offense got to work in the bottom half. With two down and the bases loaded Magrann crushed his second home run of the year a grand slam over the right centerfield wall to give the Royals a 4-0 lead. Landry would then work out of trouble in the top of second as he struck out the side around a pair of singles while the Royals offense added to their lead in the bottom half.

With runners on second and third and one down David Rivera delivered a sac fly to make it 5-0 before J.J. Cruz launched a two run bomb to increase the Royals lead to 7-0. Landry then put down the Spirit in order in the top of the third while Magrann crushed his second home run of the game on the first pitch he saw to increase the Royals lead to 9-0. Landry got out of trouble again in the top of the fourth with two runners as he induced a groundout to end the threat. The Royals offense then tacked on another run as Magrann picked up his seventh RBI of the game on a groundout to make it 10-0.

The Spirit would pull back a run in the top of the fifth to make it 10-1 but the Royals answered again in the bottom half. After back to back singles to start the inning Rivera followed with an RBI single up the middle to make it 11-1. Three batters later Ryan Maciel lined an RBI single to right to make it 12-1 but the inning ended as Mylan Jones was thrown out advancing to second. Meanwhile Bear Pinedo worked a scoreless 1 1/3 innings for the Royals before Luke Wallin threw the final two as the Royals won 12-3.

Game 2:
Chaz McWilliams got the start and pitched 1 1/3 innings allowing two runs on three hits while walking three and striking out three. Steven Ordorica (1-0) picked up the win in relief pitching 5 2/3 innings allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out five. Mario Tostado led the Royals offense going 1-for-4 with 3 RBIs.

The Spirit jumped on top of McWilliams in the first as they made it 2-0 and had runners on second and third with one out as they looked for more runs. McWilliams held strong coming back to strikeout the next two batters and limit the damage. The Royals offense then responded in the bottom half as Alex Moreno and Rivera hit back to back doubles to make it 2-1. Two batters later Alec Arnone ripped an RBI single to right to tie the game 2-2. Cruz then stole home to give the Royals a 3-2 lead.

McWilliams then ran into trouble in the top of the second as the Spirit loaded the bases. Ordorica then came in from the bullpen and induced a double play to end the threat on the second pitch he threw. Amari Bartee then made it 4-2 as he laid down a perfect bunt single to score the runner from third in the bottom of the second. The Spirit would comeback to tie it 4-4 in the top of the fifth but the Royals quickly answered in the bottom half with Cruz delivering a one out RBI single to center to put the Royals back up 5-4.

Ordorica looked to close out the game in the top of the seventh as he putdown the first two batters he faced but then allowed a single to give the Spirit life. The Spirit then took advantage of a blown pickoff call and on the next pitch hit a two run homer to go up 6-5. The Royals weren't about to be undone by the call as Tostado crushed a three run walk off home run in the bottom of the seventh with one down to give the Royals an 8-6 win and a much needed series win over the Spirit.

The Royals continue action at home as they host NCAA Division III Whittier College on Tuesday, February 20 at 6:00 PM at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.
