Zavala and Prowse Lead Royals to 3-1 Win Over Bobcats

Fullerton, CA – The Hope International men's volleyball team (3-1) bounced back from Wednesday's loss as they took down the UC Merced Bobcats 3-1 on Friday evening at home in the Darling Pavilion.

The Bobcats got off to a good start in the first set as they opened on a 5-1 run before going on to take an 11-5 lead. The Royals kept it close as a kill by Coby Prowse pulled them within 15-12 but the Bobcats had all the answers as they went on to take set one 25-16 and go up 1-0. The Bobcats held the early lead in the second set until the Royals went on a 6-1 run with back to back service aces from Prowse putting them up 9-5. The Bobcats battled back to get within 13-11 but the Royals quickly answered with back to back kills from Prowse and Julian Zavala as they led 15-11. The Bobcats then clawed their way back to 23-20 but the Royals closed out the set with back to back kills from RJ Ruacho and Zavala to win 25-20 and tie the game 1-1.

The Royals seized the momentum in the third set as they went up 5-2 but the Bobcats would comeback to take the lead as they went up 15-13 midway through the set. Prowse then came up with a big kill to start a 7-1 run as the Royals regained a 20-16 advantage. The Bobcats responded to make it 20-18 but the Royals had all the answers as Kyler Tufuga finished off the set with a kill as the Royals won 25-20 and took a 2-1 lead. The Bobcats didn't go down without a fight as they took an early 7-3 but the Royals slowly but surely came back as a block by Brian Castro and Prowse tied the game 10-10. The Royals would then take a 14-11 lead on a kill by Prowse. The Bobcats made one last push as they rallied to make it 24-23 but Prowse and Santiago Mantovani came up with a huge block to seal a 25-23 win to take the game 3-1. Zavala led the way with 15 kills while Prowse added 11.

The Royals continue action at home as they host Simpson on Saturday, February 10 at 6:00 PM in the Darling Pavilion.
