Chacon and Puente Help Royals Shock No. 1 Owls in Doubleheader Sweep

Glendale, AZ – The No. 19 Hope International University softball team (10-1) extended their winning streak to seven games with a thrilling doubleheader upset sweep of the No. 1 Oregon Tech Owls coming from behind to win the first game 5-4 in eight innings and then holding on for a 6-5 win in game two on Friday in Glendale, AZ.

Game 1:
Allie Puente (6-1) picked up the win pitching eight innings allowing four runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out four. Asia Chacon led the offense going 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs.

The Royals got to the top-ranked Owls early as Alyssa Castaneda drove home a run on a sac fly to put the Royals up 1-0. Allie shut down the Owls until the fourth inning when they pushed across a run to tie the game 1-1. From there both teams searched for the go-ahead run and it was the Owls who found it as they took a 4-1 lead in the top of the sixth. Allie then limited the damage inducing a groundout to end the inning.

Looking for an answer the Royals got one as Jazzy Smith ripped a two-out RBI double to right to pull the Royals within 4-2. Allie then held the Owls in the seventh working around a walk and a single to retire the side and give the Royals one last chance to tie it. Down to their final out Chacon blasted her first home run of the year a two run shot to left to tie the game 4-4 and send it to extras.

The Owls got runners on second and third with no one out to start the top of the eighth but Allie shut them down inducing three groundouts to give the Royals a chance to walk it off in the bottom half. The Royals loaded the bases with one out and walked off with a 5-4 win as Arianna Coronado forced an error to give the Royals the upset.

Game 2:
Grace Craig (3-0) picked up the win pitching 6 1/3 innings allowing five runs, three earned on seven hits while walking one and striking out one. Allie Puente picked up her fist save of the season allowing one hit over 2/3 inning pitched. Castaneda led the Royals offense going 1-for-4 with 2 RBIs.

The Royals once again broke through first as Natalie Corrales ripped a one-out RBI double to left to put the Royals up 1-0. The Owls fought back in the bottom half to take a 2-1 lead but Craig came back to induce a groundout to limit the damage.

The Royals then got back to work in the top of the fifth as they got three straight singles to load the bases with nobody out. Sarah Reisler then blooped an RBI single down the left-field line to tie the game 2-2. McCraw then followed with a sac fly before Castaneda delivered a two-run single to center to make it 5-2. Two batters later Smith lined an RBI single to center to increase the Royals lead to 6-2.

The top-ranked Owls didn't go down easily as they pulled a run back in the bottom of the fifth to make it 6-3. Craig continued to deal as she shutdown the Owls in the bottom of the sixth but then ran into trouble in the bottom of the seventh. Allie then came in to pitch and allowed two runs before inducing a flyout to end the game as the Royals won 6-5 in a monumental upset.

The Royals continue action in Arizona on Saturday, February 10 as they take on Embry-Riddle (AZ) in a doubleheader beginning at 10:00 AM in Glendale, AZ. There will only be live stats available for this event.
