Castaneda Walk Off Leads Royals to Split With Eagles

Fullerton, CA – The No. 7 Hope International University softball team (22-5) split their third doubleheader in a row as they fell 3-1 in game one before coming back to win 8-7 in 8 innings in game two against the Avila University Eagles on Monday afternoon at home at Bastanchury Park in Fullerton, CA..

Game 1:
Allie Puente (13-5) took the loss pitching a complete game 7 innings allowing three runs on four hits while walking one and striking out seven. Jazzy Smith led the offense going 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Puente worked around a leadoff walk in the first to retire the Eagles and keep the game scoreless. The Royals offense then threatened in the bottom of the first but Asia Chacon was thrown out at home on a sac fly attempt as the game remained scoreless. Puente continued to shutdown the Eagles until the third when an inside the park home run just off the glove of the left fielder gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

The Royals fought back in the bottom of the third as Smith came through with a clutch two out RBI single into centerfield to tie the game 1-1. The Eagles though answered with another home run in the top of the sixth and seventh to extend their lead to 3-1. The Royals didn't give up as they started the bottom of the seventh with back to back hits but were unable to take advantage as they fell 3-1.

Game 2:
Grace Craig got the start and pitched 6 1/3 innings allowing seven runs on 13 hits while walking two and striking out two. Sarah Reisler picked up the win in relief pitching 1 2/3 innings allowing just two hits while striking out one. Reisler led the Royals offense going 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs.

The Eagles jumped all over the Royals in the top of the first as they took a 3-0 lead. The Royals offense sprung to life in the bottom half as Reisler got a one out single to start a rally as the Royals loaded the bases. Smith then came through with an RBI single to left field to make it 3-1. Katrina Rodriguez then drove in another run on a sac fly as the Royals pulled within. The Royals got back to work in the bottom of the second as Reisler delivered a two out RBI infield single to tie the game 3-3.

Craig then worked around a leadoff single in the top of the third to put the next three Eagles down in order while the Royals offense continued to hit in the bottom of the third. Alyssa Castaneda got things going as she blasted her first home run of the year over the center field fall to put the Royals up 4-3. The Royals then took advantage of a series of errors to load the bases before Hailey Martinez drove in another run on a hit by pitch to make it 5-3. Asia Chacon then drove in another run on a fielder's choice while Reisler came through again with an RBI single to increase the Royals lead to 7-3.

The Eagles weren't done either as they pulled a run back in the top of the fifth to make it 7-4. They weren't done yet as they led off the top of the seventh with a solo home run to make it 7-5 before getting back to back singles to put the tying runs on base. Reisler would enter the circle to close it out but gave up a game tying single as the game headed to extras 7-7.

The Eagles got the hit they needed in the top of the eighth with the runner on second and two down but Arely Coronado made a great throw to nab the runner at home and keep the game tied heading to the bottom of the eighth. The Royals meanwhile looked to end it as Chacon laid down a beautiful sac bunt to put the winning run at third with one down. The Eagles then intentionally walked the next two batters to load the bases to try to get a force out, but Castaneda delivered a perfect fielder's choice to allow Arely Coronado to race home with the winning run as the Royals walked off to an 8-7 win and a doubleheader split.

The Royals continue GSAC play at home with a big matchup against No. 11 Jessup on Friday, March 15 beginning at 11:00 AM PT at Bastanchury Park in Fullerton, CA.
