Moreno and Dorado Help Lead Royals to 6-2 Win Over Firebirds

Fullerton, CA – The No. 20 Hope International University baseball team (17-9) won their fifth game in a row as they took down the University of Saint Katherine Firebirds 6-2 on Tuesday evening at home at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.

Game 1:
Joshua Ross got the start and pitched 3 innings allowing two runs on three hits while walking two and striking out five. Aaron Orozco (2-0) picked up his second win in relief pitching 2 no hit innings while striking out one and walking one. Matthew Dorado and Alex Moreno led the Royals offense with two RBIs.

Ross ran into trouble in the top of the first as the Firebirds took a 1-0 lead and threatened for more with a runner on third and one out. Ross rebounded well striking out the next two batters to limit the damage to one. The Royals offense meanwhile picked Ross up in the bottom half as Alex Moreno crushed a solo home run over the right field wall to tie the game 1-1.

Ross then put the Firebirds down in order in the top of the second while the Royals offense got back to work in the bottom half. With runners on second and third and one down Matthew Dorado delivered a clutch two run single to put the Royals up 3-1. Dean Toigo then ripped a double down the right field line and would then come around to score on an RBI groundout by Moreno to make it 4-1. Toigo would then score on a wild pitch to give the Royals a 5-1 advantage.

The Firebirds fought back in the top of the third as they took advantage of two walks and a double to push across a run and make it 5-2. Once again Ross held strong getting a pop up to end the inning and limit the damage. Orozco then came in from the bullpen to shutdown the Firebirds and combined with Bear Pinedo, Chandler De Jong, Boom Ward and Steven Ordorica to allow no hits over the final six innings while walking two and striking out six. The Royals offense also added another run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI groundout by Toigo as they won 6-2.

The Royals continue GSAC action on the road as they head to Arizona to take on OUAZ beginning on Friday, March 22 at 5:00 PM in Surprise, AZ.
