Royals Sweep No. 19 Spirit Behind Drury Gem and Rivera Clutch Hitting

Surprise, AZ – The No. 20 Hope International University baseball team (20-9, 9-3 GSAC) improved their winning streak to eight games as they swept the No. 19 OUAZ Spirit winning 7-2 and 7-5 in eight innings to move into first place in the GSAC on Saturday evening in Surprise, AZ.

Game 1:
Justin Drury (4-0) picked up his fourth win and third in three straight starts as he pitched 5 innings allowing one run on five hits while walking two and striking out three. David Rivera, JJ Cruz and Amari Bartee led the offense driving in two runs apiece.

The Royals got their offense going in the first as they took advantage of a walk and a single before Cruz ripped a two run triple down the right field line to put the Royals up 2-0. Drury then shutdown the Spirit in the bottom half as he worked around a one out walk to get a strikeout and a groundout. Drury would continue to hold the Spirit at bay while the Royals extended their lead in the top of the fourth. This time it was Rivera who came through with a big two out two run double down the left field line to increase the Royals lead to 4-0.

Drury shutout the Spirit until the bottom of the fifth when they hit a home run to make it 4-1. That's all Drury would allow as he got a strikeout and a groundout to end the inning. The Royals then struck again in the top of the sixth as Ryan Lamastra delivered a one out RBI single through the right side to make it 5-1. The Spirit didn't give up as they got a run back in the bottom half to make it 5-2 but Sakemi Sato came in from the bullpen to get a pop out to limit the damage.

The Royals offense couldn't stop scoring either in the top of the seventh as Bartee ripped a two out two run double into the left field corner to increase the Royals lead to 7-2. That's all the offense the Royals pitching would need as Sato retired the Spirit in order in the bottom of the seventh and then worked around a one out walk in the eighth to retire the side. Boom Ward then pitched the final inning allowing just one hit while striking out the final Spirit batter to seal a 7-2 win.

Game 2:
Justin Landry got the start and pitched 4 2/3 innings allowing four runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out five. Steven Ordorica (2-1) picked up the win in relief pitching 3 1/3 innings allowing one run on one hit while walking two and striking out five. Alex Moreno led the Royals offense going 2-for-5 with 3 RBIs.

Landry got things started by putting the Spirit down in order in the bottom of the first while the Royals offense opened the scoring in the top of the second. With one on and one out Derek Sims launched an RBI double to left center to put the Royals up 1-0. Landry continued to shutdown the Spirit while Dean Toigo crushed a solo home run in the top of the fourth to extend the Royals lead to 2-0. Landry then put the Spirit down in order in the bottom half including two strikeouts while the Royals struck again in the top of the fifth. The Royals got the inning started with a walk and a single before a wild pitch moved both runners over. Moreno then delivered a two run single up the middle to increase the Royals lead to 4-0.

The Spirit didn't go down easily as they battled back to tie the game 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth. After a scoreless sixth the Royals jumped back on top in the top of the seventh as Rivera and Moreno hit back to back doubles to give the Royals a 5-4 lead. Once again the Spirit rallied to tie it 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh sending the game to extras. The Royals then took advantage of a walk and two hit batters in the top of the eighth to load the bases before Rivera stepped to the plate and delivered a clutch two run single through the left side to put the Royals up 7-5. Ordorica then shut the Spirit down in the bottom of the eighth as he struckout the side to seal a 7-5 win and a Royals sweep.

The Royals continue action at home as they host NCAA Division III Chapman on Tuesday, March 26 at 6:00 PM at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.
