Puente Helps Lead Royals to Sweep of GSAC Leading No. 22 Lions

Costa Mesa, CA – The No. 12 Hope International University softball team (28-7, 6-4 GSAC) ran their winning streak to six games as they swept a doubleheader against the GSAC leading No. 22 Vanguard University Lions winning 2-1 and 3-1 on Thursday afternoon on the road in Costa Mesa, CA..

Game 1:
Allie Puente (17-6) picked up the win throwing a complete game 8 innings allowing one run on six hits while walking one and striking out 11. Ariana Coronado led the offense going 2-for-2 with an RBI.

It was a pitcher's duel throughout as the game was scoreless until the top of the fifth. Samantha Villanueva then ripped a double to left center to get things started. After a sac bunt to move the runner to third Ariana Coronado came through with a clutch one out RBI single to put the Royals up 1-0. Puente then worked around a leadoff single in the bottom of the fifth to shut down the Lions and keep the Royals ahead.

The Lions didn't go down without a fight as they fought back in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game 1-1, but that's all Puente allowed as she came back to get a pop out and a groundout to end the inning. Neither team were able to score in the seventh as the game headed to extras. The Royals looked to end things quickly in the eighth as Arely Coronado ripped a two out RBI double down the left field line to put the Royals back up 2-1. Puente then shutdown the Lions getting a flyout and a popout with the tying run on third to seal the victory.

Game 2:
Grace Craig got the start and pitched 4 innings allowing one run on three hits while striking out one. Allie Puente (18-6) picked up the win in relief pitching 3 no hit innings while striking out 7. Ariana Coronado led the offense going 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

This time the Lions got on the board first as they took a 1-0 lead. Craig then shutdown the Lions over the next two innings while the Royals offense looked to tie the game in the top of the fourth. The Royals would take advantage of a walk and a sac bunt to put a runner in scoring position as Emma McCraw came to the plate and lined an RBI single through the left side to tie the game 1-1.

The game was on from there as the Lions looked to retake the lead in the bottom of the fifth as they got things started with a double but Puente would come in from the bullpen and retire the Lions in order to keep the game tied. The Royals then took the lead in the top of the sixth as Ariana Coronado came up clutch with a two out RBI double to give the Royals a 3-1 lead. Puente then took over from there putting the Lions down in order in the sixth and seventh including striking out the final three batters to seal a 3-1 win and a crucial doubleheader sweep.

The Royals continue GSAC action on the road as they travel to Atherton, CA to take on Menlo with a doubleheader on Friday, April 5 beginning at 12:00 PM.
