No. 12 Royals Clinch Fourth GSAC Regular Season Championship

Fullerton, CA – The No. 12 Hope International University baseball team's (31-10, 17-3 GSAC) modern day record winning streak of 19 games came to an end as they first finished off a three game GSAC series sweep of the No. 7 Jessup University Warriors 10-7 before falling 8-6 in 8 innings in the non conference matchup of the doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA. With the win in the first game the Royals clinch their fourth GSAC Regular Season Championship and the number one seed in the GSAC Tournament..

Game 1:
Justin Drury (6-0) picked up his sixth win pitching 5 2/3 innings allowing four runs on five hits while walking one and striking out 6. JJ Cruz led the offense going 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs.

Drury put the Warriors down in order in the top of the first but once again they would get on the board first as they struck for two runs in the top of the second but Drury came back to induce a flyout and limit the damage. Like in the previous two matchups the Royals got to work as they rallied in the bottom of the third. With runners on second and third out a wild pitch brought home Amari Bartee to make it 2-1. Cruz then followed with a sac fly to tie the game 2-2.

Drury then put the Warriors down in order in the top of the fourth while the Royals offense expanded their lead as Dean Togio crushed his ninth home run of the year to put the Royals up 3-2. The Royals would then strike for more as they got back to back walks with two outs. David Rivera then delivered an RBI single to make it 4-2 before the Royals added another run on an error to take a 5-2 lead. Drury continued to shutdown the Warriors while the Royals added another run on a one out RBI single by Ryan Lamstra to make it 6-2.

The Warriors continued to fight as they would force Drury from the game in the top of the sixth and pull within 6-4 but Bear Pinedo who had come in in relief came back to get a huge strikeout to limit the damage and keep the Royals ahead. The Royals would add another run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Cruz to make it 7-4. The Warriors struck back with a run in the top of the seventh to make it 7-5 but the Royals weren't done yet either as they started the bottom of the eighth with five straight singles as Alex Moreno and Cruz drove in two more runs to make it 9-5. Alec Arnone then delivered another run on an RBI groundout to make it 10-5.

Steven Ordorica looked to close out the game in the top of the ninth but the Warriors had other ideas as they started the inning with four straight single to pull within 10-7. Chandler De Jong would then come in from the bullpen and get a flyout and a huge strikeout looking to seal a 10-7 Royals win and a series sweep.

Game 2:
David Rudd-Grow got the start and pitched 4 innings allowing two runs on six hits while walking one and striking out five. Aaron Orozco (2-2) took the loss in relief pitching 2 2/3 innings allowing three runs on one hit while walking three and striking out four. Cruz and Derek Sims led the Royals offense with each driving in two runs.

Rudd-Grow worked around a single and walk to strikeout the side in the top of the first while this time the Royals took the early lead as they got the offense going in the bottom half. With runners on second and third with one out Arnone came through with an RBI single to give the Royals a 1-0 lead. Two batters later Derek Sims followed with an RBI single to put the Royals up 2-0. The Warriors looked to strike back in the top of the third as they loaded the bases with nobody out but Rudd-Grow only allowed one run on a double play as the Royals continued to lead 2-1. The Royals then added to their lead with a two out RBI double by Derek Sims in the bottom of the third to make it 3-1. The Warriors would rally to tie it as they got a run in the top of the third and top of the fourth innings to tie the game 3-3.

The tie would last long as Alex Moreno hit his fifth home run of the year to lead off the top of the fourth and put the Royals up 4-3. The Warriors would strike back with two runs in the top of the sixth to take a 5-4 lead. The Warriors would then extend their lead to 6-4 with a run in the top of the seventh. The Royals didn't go down easily as JJ Cruz launched a two run bomb to right field in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game 6-6.

The game would then head to extra innings with the Warriors taking an 8-6 lead as the rain started to come down. The rain would get heavier as the game went to the bottom of the eighth with the first Royals hitter slipping on the dirt and exiting injured but the umpires would not call the game as it continued with the Royals eventually falling 8-6 as their win streak came to a close.

The Royals continue action at home as they host NCAA Division III University of La Verne on Tuesday, April 16 at 4:00 PM at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.
