Stanley Walk Off Leads No. 12 Royals to Split With No. 22 Lions

Fullerton, CA The No. 12 Hope International University softball team (31-10, 9-7 GSAC) split a doubleheader with the No. 22 Vanguard University Lions as they fell 4-2 before winning the second game 4-3 in a walk off on Saturday afternoon at home at Bastanchury Park in Fullerton, CA..

Game 1:
Allie Puente (20-8) took the loss pitching a complete game 7 innings allowing four runs, three earned on seven hits while walking four and striking out six. Emma McCraw led the Royals offense going 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs including a homerun.

Puente put the first six Lions she faced down in order but then ran into trouble in the top of the third as the Lions broke through to take a 2-0 lead. The Royals would pull a run back in the bottom of the fourth as Emma McCraw launched a one out solo home run to make it 2-1. The Royals would then tie the game in the bottom of the sixth as McCraw grounded a one out RBI single to right field to tie the game 2-2.

The Lions would strike back in the top of the seventh on a two run home run to retake a 4-2 lead. The Royals didn't give up as Ariana Coronado smashed a one out double to give the Royals life. The next batter though would fly out and Coronado would be caught trying to advance to third as the Royals fell 4-2.

Game 2:
Grace Craig got the start and pitched 7 1/3 innings allowing three runs, two earned on nine hits while walking one and striking out three. Allie Puente (21-8) picked up the win in relief pitching 2/3 of an inning while striking out two. Kayla Stanley led the Royals offense going 3-for-4 with the walk off RBI.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third when the Royals broke through on a sac fly by McCraw to take a 1-0 lead. The Lions quickly answered in the top of the fourth to tie it 1-1 but Craig limited the damage getting a line out and a flyout to end the inning. The Lions would eventually add two runs in the top of the fifth and top of the seventh innings to take a 3-1 lead.

The Royals weren't going to go down easily though as they started the inning with a walk and a single to put runners on first and second with no outs. Asia Chacon then ripped an RBI single into right center field to make it 3-2. Sarah Reisler then layed down a perfect bunt to score the tying run and the Royals thought they had the winning run but the umpire called Chacon out at the plate as the game headed to extra innings tied 3-3.

In extra innings the Lions would move their runner over to third on a sac bunt with one out but Puente came in from the bullpen to strikeout the next two batters and keep the game 3-3. The Royals would then do the same thing in the bottom of the eighth getting the winning run to third with one down. Stanley then stepped up to the plate and delivered an RBI single down the right field line as the Royals walked off to a 4-3 win and a doubleheader split.

The Royals continue GSAC action at home as they host the Arizona Christian Firestorm on Friday, April 19 with a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 AM at Bastanchury Park in Fullerton, CA.
