Toigo Powers Royals to 14-7 Win Over NCAA DII Cougars For 12th in a Row

Azusa, CA – The No. 16 Hope International University baseball team (24-9) continued their hot streak winning their 12th game in a row as they took down the NCAA Division II Azusa Pacific University Cougars 14-7 on Tuesday evening in Azusa, CA.

David Rudd-Grow got the start and pitched 3 innings allowing one run on three hits while walking two and striking out four. Chandler De Jong (1-1) picked up his first win in relief pitching 1 1/3 inning allowing one run on one hit while striking out one. Dean Toigo led the Royals offense going 3-for-5 with 5 RBIs including two home runs.

The Royals got off to a quick start as David Rivera crushed a leadoff home run to left field to make it 1-0. Then later in the inning Toigo delivered a clutch two out RBI single down the left field line to increase the Royals lead to 2-0. Rudd-Grow meanwhile shutdown the Cougars until the bottom of the third when they pulled back a run to make it 2-1. He bounced back getting the final batter to groundout as he limited the damage. The Cougars continued to fight as they got to the Royals bullpen scoring three runs over the next few innings to take a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth.

The Royals didn't give up either as they struck back in the top of the sixth as Toigo launched a two out solo shot over the right field wall for his fifth home run in five games to make it 4-3. The Royals then continued their comeback in the top of the seventh as Mario Tostado worked a walk to start a one out rally. Three straight singles would follow as Alex Moreno tied the game 4-4. The Royals then retook the lead at 5-4 on a sac fly by JJ Cruz. Rivera would then score a wild pitch to make it 6-4 before Toigo unloaded his second home run of the game, a three run bomb over the left field wall to push the Royals lead to 9-4. The Royals weren't done as they tacked on one more on an RBI single from Derek Sims to make it 10-4.

The Cougars answered with a home run in the bottom of the seventh to make it 10-5 but De Jong came back to retire the next three batters to maintain the Royals lead. The Royals offense then added another run in the top of eighth to increase their lead to 11-5. The Cougars didn't go down easily as they got two runs in the bottom of the eighth to make it 11-7 but Boom Ward who came in in relief got a strikeout and a groundout to limit the damage to two runs. The Royals offense continued to score to as Toigo scored on a wild pitch before Rivera delivered a two out two run single to center to increase the Royals lead to 14-7. Steven Ordorica then shutdown the Cougars in the bottom of the ninth putting them down in order to seal a 14-7 win.

The Royals continue GSAC action at home as they host The Master's University on Friday, April 5 at 2:00 PM.
