Royals Drop GSAC Tournament Opener to Lions

Irvine, CA - The No. 14 Hope International University softball team (33-14) dropped their first game of the GSAC Tournament as they fell 3-2 to the Vanguard University Lions on Monday afternoon at the OC Great Park in Irvine, CA.

Allie Puente (23-11) took the loss pitching 6 innings allowing three runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out 9. Asia Chacon and Samantha Villanueva led the Royals offense driving in one run apiece.

The Royals jumped on top of the Lions in the top of the first as Chacon ripped an RBI triple to centerfield after a leadoff walk to put the Royals up 1-0. Three batters later Villanueva came through with a clutch two-out RBI double to left field to increase the Royals lead to 2-0.

Puente meanwhile worked out of trouble in the first and second innings to keep the Lions off the board but they would eventually breakthrough in the bottom of the third as they took advantage of poor fielding to make it 2-1. Puente tried to hold the Lions to just the one run but they tied the game in the bottom of the fourth 2-2.

From there both teams searched for the go ahead run. The Royals would put the go ahead run on second base in both the fifth and sixth innings but were unable to score as the game remained tied. The Lions would then go back up 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth off another misread flyball. The Royals looked to tie it in the top of the seventh but were unable to take advantage of an error as they fell 3-2.

The Royals now fall into the losers bracket and will take on the fourth seeded OUAZ Spirit on Tuesday, April 30 at 3:00 PM at the OC Great Park Softball Stadium in Irvine, CA.
