Royals Split With Saints and Comets to Stay Alive in NAIA Opening Round

San Antonio, TX - The No. 23 Hope International University softball team (37-16) fell 1-0 to the top seeded Our Lady of the Lake Saints before bouncing back with a 9-0 five inning victory over the Cottey College Comets on Tuesday afternoon to stay alive in the NAIA Opening Round at St. Mary's University Softball Stadium in San Antonio, TX.

Game 1:
Allie Puente (26-13) took the loss despite allowing one run on one hit while walking two and striking out eight over 6 innings. Kassie Puente led the Royals offfense going 2-for-3 with a double.

It was classic pitcher's due throughout as the Royals looked to upset the top team in the country. It was the Saints though who struck first as they took advantage of a leadoff walk and would eventually score on a groundout to take a 1-0 lead.

The Royals looked to even the score as Kassie Puente ripped a one out double to left field in the the top of the fifth to give the Royals their best scoring opportunity but they were unable to cash in as they continued to trail. Allie continued to hold the Saints at bay but the Royals offense wasn't able to take advantage as they fell 1-0.

Game 2:
Allie Puente (27-13) picked up the win throwing a two hitter over 5 innings while striking out four. Asia Chacon led the Royals offense going 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs.

Needing a win to keep their world series hopes alive the Royals turned back to Allie Puente on the mound and she didn't disappoint as she put the first six Comets she faced down in order while the Royals offense roared to life in the bottom of the second with two outs. Kayla Stanley got the Royals rally started with a single as the Royals went on to load the bases. Arely Coronado then came through with an RBI single through the left side to put the Royals up 1-0. Reisler then followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0. The Royals weren't done yet as Asia Chacon ripped a two run single and a third run would score on the throw as the Royals took a commanding 5-0 lead.

Allie continued to shut down the Comets over the next three innings while the Royals offense struck for another big inning in the bottom of the fourth. The Royals got the inning started with back to back singles before a sac fly by Arely Coronado drove in two more runs to put the Royals up 7-0. The Royals then got three straight singles as Emma McCraw increased the Roylas advantage to 8-0. Samantha Villanueva then delivered a sac fly to increase the Royals lead to 9-0. Allie Puente then worked around a single to retire the Comets in the fifth as the Royals won via mercy rule 9-0.

With the win the Royals advance to play the No. 1 Our Lady of the Lake Saints again on Wednesday, May 15 at 10:00 AM PT/12:00 PM CT. The Royals will need to defeat the Saints twice to advance to their first World Series.
