Women’s Volleyball Swept by Redhawks

MESA, Ariz. – Hope International women's volleyball dropped a 25-18, 25-22, 25-19 contest to Benedictine Mesa in GSAC action on Wednesday.

The Royals (6-10, 2-7 GSAC) lost their fifth match in a row as Benedictine Mesa received a match-high 12 kills from Sophie Drollinger and a 10-kill, 12-dig effort by Railey Druxman.

Lole Mamea and Olivia Samaniego led HIU with nine kills apiece. Samaniego did not have an error in 25 swings as she hit .360 for the match.

Annie Nugent tallied a match-best 16 digs, while Alyssa Bishop and Rita Nua posted 12 and 11 assists, respectively.

The Redhawks (12-7, 4-5 GSAC) hit .204 for the match and the Royals .113.

BENU set the tone for the contest in set one, scoring the first five points. The Royals battled back to close within 8-7 and trailed by just two, 12-10, following a Bishop service ace. But the Redhawks utilized a 5-1 run to take a 17-11 lead.

HIU scored three straight points to reduce the deficit to 21-18, but BENU reeled off the last four points to take the 25-18 victory. 

Four early lead changes took place in set two. With HIU leading 7-5, the Redhawks scored four of the next five points to grab a 9-8 advantage. HIU forged a 9-9 tie on a Samaniego kill, but BENU went on a 4-0 run – getting a service ace from Vivianna Galvan and a kill from Drollinger.

HIU crept within a point at 16-15. However, BENU responded with a 6-0 run, including three kills from Galvan, and led by seven at 22-15. The visitors showed fight and answered with a 6-0 run of their own, with Samaniego in on a double block with Vianka Martinez, followed by two more Samaniego kills.

Ahead 23-22, BENU benefited from an HIU service error, then found Drollinger for the set-ending putaway and 25-22 triumph.

The match continued to be defined by runs in set three. BENU turned a 5-5 tie into a 9-5 lead. The Redhawks remained in front by four at 15-11, but HIU scored twice to pull within 15-13. BENU discovered another 6-0 run – getting two kills apiece from Drollinger and Druxman – and held a 21-13 edge.

Drxuman ended the match with a kill to give the Redhawks the 25-19 triumph.

HIU returns home on Saturday to battle The Master's at 2:00 p.m.
