FULLERTON – Four Royals scored in double figures to power the Hope International men's basketball team to a 71-54 victory against Stanton on Wednesday evening at Darling Pavilion.
CJ Fisher tied his career high with 17 points to lead all scorers. The senior made 7 of 14 floor shots and pulled down a game-high tying seven rebounds.
Junior Addy G'Bye hit four three-pointers en route to a 14-point night. He chipped in five rebounds, two assists, a blocked shots and a pair of steals. Aman Haynes dropped 12 points on 5 of 6 shooting in an efficient 15 minutes, and Jorren Edmonds tallied 10 points to go along with six rebounds, six assists and two steals.
The Royals (2-0) shot 44.8 (26 of 58) percent from the field and held the Elks to 38.9 (21 of 54) percent efficiency. HIU dominated the glass with a 43-21 advantage, and scored 22 points off of 17 Stanton turnovers.
HIU also blocked six shots with four different Royals contributing in that department.
The home team led from start to finish, getting a G'Bye three-pointer to take a 3-0 lead. G'Bye and Fisher combined for 14 of HIU's first 15 points as the Royals held an early 15-7 lead.
Cade Potter's layup gave HIU its first double-digit lead at 21-10 with 11:10 to go.
The Royals held the Elks (1-4) without a point for six minutes and eventually widened their lead to 39-14. HIU settled for a 39-19 lead at halftime.
HIU remained in front by 21 at 51-30 with 12:24 remaining in the game, but the Elks went on a 9-0 run over a three-minute stretch to cut the deficit to 12. Stanton got as close as 11 on three occasions – 55-44, 57-46 and 59-48 – but back-to-back jumpers by Edmonds bumped the lead back up to 15.
The Royals meet Bethesda for the second time in as many weeks, hosting the Flames on Friday for a 5:00 p.m. tip.
