Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Royals Fall to Huntington at Cactus Classic

CHANDLER, Ariz. – Miles Good scored 36 points and Huntington shot 31 of 37 at the foul line to hand No. 13 Hope International an 89-82 defeat in Cactus Classic men's basketball action at the Coyote Center on Thursday.

The Royals – despite shooting 55.9 (33 of 59) percent for the game – could not overcome the disparity at the free throw line. HIU shot just 14 free throws, making eight.

HIU committed a season-low five turnovers and held an 18-4 advantage in points off turnovers, but the Foresters parlayed a 50-37 halftime lead, aided by 61.5 (16 of 26) first half shooting, into their third straight win over a top-15 team.

Freshman Aman Haynes registered his third 20-point game, finishing with a career-high 22 points on 10 of 13 shooting. It was his 10th straight double-figure outing. He tied for team-high honors with six rebounds and hit a pair of three-pointers.

Senior Nick Hopkins added 18 points on 6 of 12 shooting, while Jorren Edmonds shot 7 of 10 from the floor en route to 15 points.

The Royals battled foul trouble all game with CJ Fisher and Darvelle Wyatt fouling out, and three others saddled with four fouls.

Freshman JD Davis made his Royals debut and finished with eight points and a steal in 13 minutes.

Good scored 20 of his 36 points to help the Foresters build their 13-point halftime lead.

After a series of early lead changes, Good reeled off eight consecutive points to give Huntington a 13-8 lead. Back-to-back three-pointers by Cade Brenner opened up a 19-8 advantage, polishing off a 14-2 run that set the tone for the rest of the half.

HIU fell into a 26-12 hole before building a comeback. The Royals responded with a 13-4 run – keyed by triples from Darvelle Wyatt, Edmonds and Hopkins – to reduce the deficit to 30-25 with 5:07 remaining.

Haynes canned a three to bring HIU within 35-31, but the Foresters hit five of their last six shots to score 15 of the last 21 points of the half. Huntington made 8 of 13 from distance to offset a respectable 5 of 9 showing from the Royals.

The Royals continued to trail by double digits five minutes into the second half, but an 10-2 run trimmed the deficit to 62-56 with 13:45 to go. Haynes had six points during that run.

However, the Royals could not get any closer than six the rest of the way. Good made 11 of 13 from the foul line in the second half, and finished 15 of 17 from the charity stripe overall.

Davis scored HIU's final six points in a productive stint off the bench.

Jackson Paul helped Huntington's cause with 18 points and five assists, while Kaden Johnson added 15 points and 11 rebounds.

HIU continues Cactus Classic competition on Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. (PT) tip against Rocky Mountain.
