Royals Split With No. 2 Drovers and No. 8 Stars

Shawnee, OK - The No. 17 Hope International University softball team (6-2) split day two at the NAIA SB Invitational as they fell 4-3 to the No. 2 Science & Arts Drovers in nine innings but bounced back with an 8-4 win over the Oklahoma City University Stars on Saturday in Shawnee, OK.

Game 1:
Alexis Galvan (0-1) took the loss pitching a complete game 8 1/3 innings allowing four runs, three earned on nine hits while walking two and striking out seven. Natalie Corrales led the Royals offense going 1-for-4 with a home run and 3 RBIs.

The Drovers would jump on top in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead. The Royals looked for an answer but were held without a hit through the first 3 1/3 innings. They finally got a hit with one out in the top of the fourth but were unable to rally as they continued to trail. The Drovers would then add another run in the bottom of the sixth as they took a 2-0 lead.

Down to their final three outs the Royals needed a big hit and got one as Vivian Little doubled and then two batters later Corrales tied the game by smashing her first home run of the year to make it 2-2. The game then headed to extras where the Royals struck first in the top of the ninth with an RBI fielder's choice from Corrales to go up 3-2. The Royals couldn't hold off the Drovers though as they walked it off in the bottom of the ninth with the Royals falling 4-3.

Game 2:
Kaitlyn Maaske got the start and pitched 2 1/3 innings allowing two runs on three hits while walking four. Grace Craig (2-0) picked up the win in relief pitching 4 1/3 innings allowing two runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out three. Sarah Reisler and Emma McCraw led the Royals offense with both going 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs.

The Stars struck first in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead. The Royals quickly answered in the top of the second as Asia Chacon tripled to lead off the inning and would later score on a two out RBI single by Reisler to make it 2-1. The Royals then struck for a big inning in the top of the fourth. The Royals would load the bases with one out for Reisler who came through with another RBI single to tie the game 2-2. LIttle then delivered an RBI groundout to put the Royals up 3-2 before Emma McCraw followed with a two run single to increase the Royals lead to 5-2.

The Stars would answer in the bottom of the fourth to get within 5-4 but that's as close as the Royals let them get. The Royals would then add insurance runs in the top of the fifth as Amanda Esquivel came up clutch with a two out RBI double to make it 6-4 and would then add another run on an error to take a 7-4 lead. Corrales would then smash her second home run of the day with two outs in the top of the seventh to extend the Royals lead to 8-4. The Stars looked for an answer as Craig ran into trouble in the bottom of the seventh but Galvan came in in relief and got the final out to secure the upset win.

The Royals wrap up action at the NAIA SB Invitational on Sunday, February 23 as they take on Missouri Baptist at 8:00 AM PT followed by Columbia at 10:15 AM PT.
