Galvan and Maaske Lead Royals in Sweep of Warriors

Irvine, CA - The No. 17 Hope International University softball team (10-2) continued their season on the road with a doubleheader sweep of the Westcliff University Warriors winning 5-0 and 6-2 on Friday evening at the Great Park Softball field in Irvine, CA.

Game 1:
Alexis Galvan (2-1) picked up the win pitching a complete game 7 inning shutout allowing just four hits while striking out four. Asia Chacon led the Royals offense going 3-for-3 with an RBI.

The game was scoreless through the first two innings until the Royals came to life in the top of the third. Vivian Little got things started with a two out single to start a rally. Little then stole second and came home on an RBI single by Emma McCraw to put the Royals ahead 1-0. Alyssa Castaneda and Natalie Corrales then ripped back to back RBI doubles to put the Royals up 3-0.

The Warriors looked for an answer but Galvan worked around two singles in the bottom of the third to get a big strikeout to keep them off the board before retiring them in order in the bottom of the fourth and bottom of the fifth. The Royals offense then added to their lead as Chacon delivered an RBI triple to right center to make it 4-0. Two batters later Gabriella Holmes came through with an RBI single through the left side to make it 5-0. Galvan then shutdown the Warriors as the Royals won 5-0.

Game 2:
Kaitlyn Maaske (5-1) got the start and picked up her fifth win throwing a complete game 7 innings allowing two runs on six hits while striking out four. Samantha Villanueva led the Royals offense going 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs.

The Royals jumped on top in the first inning as they loaded bases with two down for Villanueva who worked a walk to put the Royals up 1-0. Maaske meanwhile shutdown the Warriors over the first three innings including retiring them in order in the bottom of the second. The Royals then added to their lead in the top of the fourth as they took advantage of an error to make it 2-0 before Vivian Little drove in a run on a fielder's choice to put the Royals ahead 3-0.

Maaske would retire the Warriors in order in the fourth but they would finally get on the board with two outs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 3-2. Maaske came back to get a groundout to limit the damage while the Royals added some insurance runs in the top of the seventh. With runners on second and third and one down Chacon delivered an RBI single up the middle to make it 4-2. Villanueva would then follow with an RBI single and would then score herself to put the Royals ahead 6-2. Maaske then put the Warriors down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh to seal the win.

The Royals continue action on the road with the start of GSAC play as they travel to Glendale, AZ to take on Arizona Christian on Friday, March 7 with a doubleheader beginning at 4:30 PM.
