Royals Sweep Golden Eagles For Second Time

Riverside, CA - The No. 17 Hope International University softball team (4-0) swept the La Sierra University Golden Eagles for the second time as they won 3-0 and 7-4 on Thursday afternoon on the road in Riverside, CA.

Game 1:
Kaityln Maaske (2-0) threw a complete game shutout over 7 innings allowing just six hits while walking one and striking out two. Asia Chacon, Vivian Little and Samatha Villanueva led the offense with an RBI apiece.

It was a pitcher's duel throughout as the Royals were unable to muster much offense. Maaske meanwhile ran into trouble in the first giving up two out doubles in the first and second and a one out double in the third but she didn't flinch as she retired the Golden Eagles in each inning to keep the game scoreless. The Royals meanwhile got their first hit in the top of the fourth but were unable to cash in as the game continued 0-0. The Royals threatened again in the top of the fifth with runners on the corners and two outs but again were unable to capitalize. The Golden Eagles once again got a hit in the fifth but Maaske was up to the task getting a line out and a strikeout to keep the game deadlocked.

The Royals finally broke the stalemate in the top of the sixth as Villanueva came through with a one out RBI single to put the Royals up 1-0. The Golden Eagles looked for an answer but Maaske held them off the board working around a walk in the bottom of the sixth before retiring them in order in the bottom of the seventh. The Royals offense also tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh as Chacon delivered an RBI single down the left field line and Little followed with an RBI groundout as the Royals won 3-0.

Game 2:
Gloria Craig got the start and pitched 2 1/3 innings allowing three runs on three hits while walking walking four. Vivian Little (1-0) picked up the win in relief pitching 1 2/3 innings allowing one run on three hits while walking one and striking out one. Asia Chacon led the Royals going 3-for-4 with an RBI.

Unlike the first game this one was not a pitcher's duel with the Royals striking first in the top of the first on a sac fly by McCraw to take a 1-0 lead. The Golden Eagles answered in the bottom of the first to tie it 1-1. The Royals would take the lead back in the top of the second without recording a hit as they loaded the bases with two walks and a hit batter before a bases loaded walk to Makenna Stuart put them back up 2-1. The Golden Eagles would again answer this time in the bottom of the the third to retake a 3-2 lead.

The Royals weren't down for long as they got three singles in a row with Chacon driving in a run to tie the game 3-3 in the top of the fourth. The Royals then retook the lead in the top of the fifth as they loaded the bases with nobody out for Gabriella Holmes who delivered a sac fly to make it 4-3. Brianna Lucero then followed with an RBI groundout to make it 5-3. Little then put the Golden Eagles down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the fifth before the Royals added to their lead in the top of the sixth with Little ripping an RBI double to center to make it 6-3. The Golden Eagles didn't go down easily as they made it 6-4 but Grace Craig worked out of the jam getting a strikeout and forceout to end the inning. Makenna Stuart then delivered an RBI single to center in the top of the seventh to make it 7-4 while Grace shutdown the Golden Eagles in the bottom of the seventh retiring them in order to seal the win.

The Royals continue action on the road as they travel to Costa Mesa, CA to face former GSAC foe Vanguard with a doubleheader on Friday, February 7 beginning at 12:00 PM.
