Royals Sweep Nelson Arizona Warriors to Kick off Road Trip

Surprise, AZ - The No. 19 Hope International University softball team (14-5) kicked off a six game Arizona road trip as they swept the Nelson University Arizona Warriors 7-2 and 11-0 in five innings on Thursday afternoon at Willow Canyon High School in Surprise, AZ.

Game 1:
Alexis Galvan (4-3) picked up the win throwing her fifth complete game of the season pitching 7 innings allowing two runs, one earned on four hits while walking three and striking out three. Emma McCraw led the Royals offense going 3-for-4 with 4 RBIs.

The Royals jumped on top of the Warriors in the first inning as they started the game with three straight singles as McCraw drove in the first run of the game to make it 1-0. The Royals then loaded the bases and drove in two more runs on a hit batter and a walk to increase their lead to 3-0. The Warriors struck back with a run in the bottom of the first to make it 3-1 but Galvan limited the damage working out of a bases loaded jam.

The Royals would then add to their lead in the top of the second as McCraw crushed her first home run of the season, a two run shot to put the Royals up 5-1. The Warriors would strike back in the bottom of the third to make it 5-2 but Galvan shut them down over the rest of the game retiring them in order in the bottom of the seventh. The Royals also tacked on two more runs as Natalie Corrales delivered a sac fly in the top of the fifth and McCraw ripped a two out RBI double to left in the top of the sixth as the Royals won 7-2.

Game 2:
Kaitlyn Maaske (8-2) earned her eighth win pitching a complete game five inning shutout allowing just three hits while walking two and striking out two. Vivian Little led the Royals offense going 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs.

Once again the Royals jumped on top in the top of the first as Vivian Little lashed an RBI double to left center to put the Royals up 1-0. McCraw then forced an error drive in a second run as the Royals took a 2-0 lead. Little then came through with another RBI double in the top of the second to increase the Royals lead to 3-0. The Royals offense then struck again the top of the third as Asia Chacon crushed a two run bomb with nobody out to put the Royals up 5-0.

The Warriors looked for a response but Maaske continued to shut them down while the Royals broke open the game in the top of the fourth. McCraw would force another error to drive in a run with nobody out before Castaneda came through with an RBI single up the middle to make it 7-0. Two batters later Brianna Lucero delivered an RBI single to center to make it 8-0. The Royals weren't done yet as Lily Hernandez ripped an RBI double to center followed by a two run single by Karlie Bilbrey as the Royals took a commanding 11-0 lead. The Warriors tried to extend the game in the bottom of the fifth but Maaske worked around a leadoff double getting a popout, strikeout and groundout to seal a run shortened 11-0 win.

The Royals continue action in Arizona as they open up a four game GSAC series against OUAZ with a doubleheader on Friday, March 21 beginning at 4:00 PM in Surprise, AZ.
