Royals Drop Doubleheader to Warriors

Irvine, CA - The No. 18 Hope International University softball team (33-11) dropped a doubleheader to the Westcliff University Warriors as they fell 3-2 and 5-4 on Thursday evening at the OC Great Park in Irvine, CA.

Game 1:
Kaitlyn Maaske (16-4) got the start and took the loss pitching 6 2/3 innings allowing three runs, two earned on seven hits while walking three and striking out four. Gabriela Holmes led the Royals offesne going 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs.

The game was scoreless until the top of the second when Holmes ripped a one out two run double to right center to give the Royals a 2-0 lead. Maaske meanwhile shutdown the Warriors over five innings including retiring them in order in the bottom of the second.

The Warriors would finally answer in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game 2-2 but Maaske limited the damage with a flyout and a strikeout to end the inning. The Royals looked to take back the lead in the top of the seventh but were unable to generate any offense while the Warriors walked it off in the bottom of the seventh as the Royals fell 3-2.

Game 2:
Alexis Galvan pitched 6 innings allowing four runs, three earned on seven hits while walking two and striking out six. Grace Craig took the loss pitching 2/3 of an inning allowing one run on two hits. Sarah Reisler led the Royals offense going 2-for-4 with an RBI.

It was a pitcher's duel until the top of the third when the Royals broke the deadlock as Emma McCraw delivered a one out RBI single to give the Royals a 1-0 lead. The Royals added to their lead in the top of the fourth as Breanna Lucero ripped an RBI double to make it 2-0. Then with two outs Reisler delivered a two out RBI single to increase the Royals lead to 3-0.

Galvan continued to shut down the Warriors while the Royals struck for another run in the top of the fifth. With runners on the corner and one down Natalie Corrales put the Royals up 4-0 with an RBI single to center. The Warriors would pull back a run in the bottom of the fifth and sixth inning to make it 4-2. The Royals tried to seal the game in the seventh but were unable to do so as the Warriors walked it off again as the Royals fell 5-4.

The Royals continue action at home as they host Grace University on Thursday, April 24 with a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 PM at Bastanchury Park in Fullerton, CA
