PRESCOTT, Ariz. – Savannah Salter and Lole Mamea notched 15 kills apiece to lead the Hope International women's volleyball team to an exciting five-set win at Embry-Riddle on Saturday afternoon.
Set scores were 19-25, 25-17, 25-22, 20-25, 15-12.
Lole Mamea posted five of the team's seven service aces.
Lauren Cummings was the third Royal to finish with double-digit kills, as she chipped in 10 on .368 (10-3-19) hitting. Manaia Mamea added nine kills.
Setter Alyssa Bishop compiled a career-high 40 assists, which is tied for ninth-most in the GSAC this season. Annie Nugent led the back row with 22 digs.
The Royals (5-4, 1-1 GSAC) hit .159 for the match, saving their best effort for the deciding fifth set in which they swung at a .409 clip.
Emma Barber topped Embry-Riddle (7-7, 1-2) in kills with 12.
Six lead changes occurred in set one. The Royals used a 5-0 run to take their final lead of the set at 10-8. But the Eagles responded with a 5-0 run of their own to claim the lead for good at 13-10.
A second ERAU 5-0 run extended the advantage to 18-11. HIU narrowed the deficit to 22-19, but an ERAU solo block by Hannah Clear closed out the 25-19 victory.
HIU fired out to a 5-0 lead in set two with Manaia Mamea and Lole Mamea combining for five kills. ERAU trimmed the deficit to 7-5, but the visitors launched a 9-0 run to post an insurmountable 16-5 lead.
The Eagles briefly flirted with a comeback, scoring five straight points to close within six. HIU claimed the 25-17 win.
In set three, seven early ties took the two teams to a 10-10 deadlock. ERAU notched three consecutive points to go up 13-10, but a 7-3 HIU run handed the lead back to the visitors at 17-16.
The score was even at 20-20, but two Salter kills gave HIU a 23-21 lead. Lole Mamea served up an ace to get to set point, and an ERAU attack error resulted in a 25-22 Royal victory.
The home team answered in set four with a 25-20 triumph, overcoming an early deficit. The Eagles reeled off five straight points to take an 11-8 lead, and maintained the edge for the remainder of the set.
Cummings pounded a kill to inch HIU within two at 17-15, but a 6-1 ERAU run gave the home side a 23-16 advantage.
Set five started back-and-forth – HIU notched a 4-0 lead behind two kills from Cummings and another from Lole Mamea. ERAU scored three straight to pull within 4-3. The Royals responded with three in a row to open up a 7-3 cushion.
ERAU closed to within 9-8, when Salter's kill got the Royals to double-digit points. Lole Mamea followed with a kill to widen the lead to 11-8. Back came ERAU with two straight points to whittle the deficit to 11-10.
With the score tied at 12-12, Cummings, Lole Mamea and Manaia Mamea notched consecutive kills to polish off the 15-12 triumph. Lole Mamea and Cummings both had four huge kills in set five.
The Royals split their Arizona roadtrip, and return to action on Friday, September 19 at No. 14 The Master's. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
