Baseball Sweeps The Master’s Behind Landry’s 13 Strikeouts

FULLERTON – Hope International and The Master's engaged in a pair of pitcher's duels on Friday at Amerige Park, with the Royals prevailing 4-3 and 1-0 in the baseball doubleheader.

The Royals improved to 12-6 and 3-0 in the GSAC after winning both designated 7-inning games.

Josh Landry tied his career high with 13 strikeouts in the game two victory. Game one went into "extra" innings as the Royals scored the game-winner on an eighth inning wild pitch.

Game 1 – Hope International 4, The Master's 3 (8)
The Master's took a 1-0 lead with a run in the first, but HIU tied the score in the second on an Evan Jaquez RBI single.

The Mustangs retook the lead in the fourth on a Cole Rohlmeier sacrifice fly. But the Royals tied the score at 2-2 as Royce Clayton scored following two throwing errors from the TMU pitcher.

HIU went up 3-2 in the fifth as Henry Borjas drew a bases loaded walk to plate Isaiah Lane. But Ty Beck doubled to the wall in the sixth to score pinch runner Owen Payn to knot the score at 3-3.

Jaquez drew a one-out walk in the eighth and moved to second on the first baseman's interference on a pickoff attempt.

With two outs, Jaquez scored from second as Michael Chung's wild pitch went into the HIU dugout.

Starting pitchers Jake Thrift for HIU and TMU's James Coker both allowed two runs – only one earned – in effective stints. James Williams earned the win for the Royals after throwing one inning of scoreless relief. Chung took the loss despite not allowing a hit and striking out three in his 1.1 innings of work.

Game 2 – Hope International 1, The Master's 0
Landry was dominant in a complete game four-hitter. He did not issue a walk and struck out at least one Mustang in all seven innings.

He fanned five of the first seven TMU hitters to start the game. The southpaw struck out the side in the first and fourth innings. He faced a first and third situation in the fourth, but fanned Zach Jenkins and Scotty Pieper to escape the threat.

HIU scored the only run of the game in the second as Royce Clayton led off with a double and stole third. Matthew Dorado brought in Clayton with a ground-rule double down the right field line. In his first start of the season, Dorado finished 2-for-2.

Gage Webster pitched effectively for TMU, going 6.0 innings and allowing seven hits with just one walk and eight strikeouts.

The two teams conclude their four-game GSAC series with a single 9-inning contest on Saturday beginning at noon.
