Hernandez With Go Ahead Hit As Royals Come From Behind To Defeat Pioneers

Fullerton, CA – The Hope International University softball team (30-9) came from behind to defeat the University of Antelope Valley Pioneers 15-7 in 5 innings on Tuesday afternoon at Bastanchury Park in Fullerton, CA

Allie Puente got the start and pitched 2 innings allowing just one hit while striking out five. Grace Craig (5-2) picked up the win in relief pitching 1 2/3 innings allowing one run on hit while striking out two. Jaylyn Hernandez, Kassie Puente and Leah Macias led the Royals offense with each driving in three runs.

The Royals opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as they took advantage of three straight errors before Hernandez ripped a single through the right side to put the Royals up 1-0. Kassie then followed with a two run single to right to increase the Royals lead to 3-0.

The Pioneers battled back though as the Royals went to the bullpen looking to give Allie some rest before a crucial GSAC weekend. The Pioneers took advantage as they scored four runs in the top of the third and three in the top of the fourth as they took a 7-3 lead. Craig then got a strikeout and a pop out to end the inning and limit the damage.

The game then turned on its head as the Royals looked to answer in the bottom half and they did in a big way. After an infield single to lead it off the Royals loaded the bases before Emma McCraw dropped a two run single down the right field line to make it 7-5. Emily Puente then followed with an RBI single to right to make it 7-6 and then Makenna O'Toole ripped a game tying double to left field to make it 7-7. Hernandez then came to the plate and delivered a clutch two run single up the middle to put the Royals head 9-7.

The Royals weren't done though as they looked to end the game early in the bottom of the fifth. Three straight singles with one out loaded the bases before Kassie Puente forced an error to allow another run to score and make it 10-7. Ariana Coronado then lined a two run single to left to put the Royals ahead 12-7. After a blown fielder's choice loaded the bases Leah Macias in her only at bat ripped a bases clearing game ending double into the left field corner as the Royals won 15-7 in a run rule 5 inning game.

The Royals return to action with GSAC play at home as they host Arizona Christian with a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 PM on Friday, April 21 at Bastanchury Park.
