McCraw Walk Off Leads Royals Comeback in Split With Firestorm

Fullerton, CA – The Hope International University softball team (31-10, 14-6 GSAC) split a GSAC doubleheader with the Arizona Christian University Firestorm as they lost 6-5 but came back to win the second game 10-9 in 10 innings on Friday afternoon at Bastanchury Park in Fullerton, CA.

Game 1:
Allie Puente got the start and pitched 5 1/3 innings allowing three runs on six hits while striking out six. Grace Craig (5-3) took the loss in relief pitching 1 1/3 innings allowing three runs, two earned on zero hits while walking two and striking out one. Alena De La Torre and Emily Puente led the Royals offense driving in two runs each.

The Royals opened the scoring in the bottom of the second as they made it 1-0 on a bases loaded walk. Then after a fielder's choice De La Torre lined a two run single to right center to increase the Royals lead to 3-0. The Royals then added to their lead in the bottom of the third as Emily Puente unloaded a two run home run to left to make it 5-0.

The Firestorm though struck back with three runs in the top of the fourth to make it 5-3. Allie Puente had to come out of the game in the sixth and was replaced by Craig. The Firestorm took advantage and scored three runs in the top of the seventh without recording a hit as they took a 6-5 lead. The Royals had one last chance in the bottom of the seventh but were unable score after a leadoff single as they fell 6-5.

Game 2:
Olivia Candelas got the started and pitched 3 1/3 innings allowing eight runs, seven earned on nine hits while walking two and striking out one. Allie Puente (22-2) picked up the win in relief pitching 4 innings allowing one run on two hits while striking out three. Emma McCraw led the Royals offense going 5-for-6 with 4 RBIs.

The Firestorm took advantage of an error in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead. That wouldn't last long as the Royals took an advantage of a Firestorm error to tie the game before McCraw ripped an RBI single to left center to put the Royals on top 2-1.

The Firestorm though came right back with two runs in the top of the second and three in the top of the third to take a 6-2 lead. Once again though the Royals rallied as Jalyn Hernandez delivered a one out RBI single to make it 6-3 and then Kassie Puente followed with a two run bomb down the left field line to pull the Royals within 6-5.

Again though the Firestorm answered as they put up two runs in the top of the fourth to push their lead back to 8-5. The Royals didn't give in as they got a run back in the bottom half on a sac fly by Emily Puente to make it 8-6. Grace Craig then came in from the bullpen and shut down the Firestorm allowing just two hits and one walk over 2 2/3 innings of work. Meanwhile the Royals offense got right back to work in the bottom of the sixth. After a leadoff single and a walk a sac bunt then put runners on second and third and one out. McCraw then stepped to the plate and delivered a clutch two run single to right to tie the game 8-8.

Allie Puente then came in in relief and pitched a scoreless top of the seventh as the Royals looked to win it in the bottom half. After back to back singles with one out the Royals were unable to cash in as the game headed to extras. The Firestorm would score in the top of the ninth but the Royals would answer in the bottom half to tie it 9-9. Allie then put the Firestorm down in order in the top of the tenth as the Royals looked to end it and they did. Who else but McCraw stepped up and ripped an RBI single to right field to score the runner from second as the Royals walked off to a 10-9 win.

The Royals continue GSAC play at home as they host OUAZ with a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 PM on Saturday, April 22 at Bastanchury Park in Fullerton, CA.
