Royals Sweep Spirit To Win GSAC Regular Season Championship

Fullerton, CA – The Hope International University softball team (33-10, 16-6 GSAC) clinched the GSAC regular season Championship as they swept the OUAZ Spirit winning 1-0 and 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at Bastanchury Park in Fullerton, CA.

Game 1:
Allie Puente (23-2) got the start and threw a complete game shutout over 7 innings allowing just one hit while striking out 7 and walking one. Arely Coronado led the Royals driving in what proved to be the winning run..

It was a pitcher's duel throughout as the game was scorless through the first three innings until the Royals finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Two straight singles started it and then the Royals loaded the bases on an infield single with one out. Then Arely Coronado delivered an RBI groundout as McCraw raced home to make it 1-0.

That was all the run support Allie Puente need as she didn't allow a hit until the fifth and then didn't allow another base runner until a two out walk in the seventh. She then induced a flyout to end the game as the Royals won 1-0.

Game 2:
Olivia Candelas (5-5) picked up the win pitching 5 innings allowing one unearned run on one hit while walking one and striking out two. Allie Puente picked up her fourth save of the season pitching 2 innings allowing just two hits while striking out one. Emily Puente led the Royals offense going 2-for-3 with 4 RBIs including one home run.

After Candelas put the Spirit down 1-2-3 in the top of the first the Royals took the lead in the bottom half as Emily Puente crushed a three run home run, her seventh of the year to put the Royals up 3-0. Meanwhile Candelas continued to cruise in the circle not allowing a hit through three innings. The Royals then added to their lead in the fourth as Emily Puente delivered again this time lining a one out RBI single to center to increase the Royals lead to 4-0.

The Spirit would finally get a hit in the fourth off Candelas but she came right back inducing two flyouts to end the inning. The Spirit would finally get on the board in the fifth as they took advantage of an error to make it 4-1. Allie Puente then came in from the bullpen and shutdown the Spirit as she struck out the final batter of the game to seal the win for the Royals. With the win the Royals win their third GSAC regular season Championship and first since 2021. They also earn the first seed in the GSAC Tournament which will be played May 1-3 at the OC Great Park in Irvine, CA.

The Royals wrap up GSAC regular season play at home as they host Vanguard with a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, April 25 at Bastanchury Park in Fullerton, CA.
