Royals Force Second Game But Fall in GSAC Final To Lions

Irvine, CA – The Hope International softball team (39-14) won their first game today at the GSAC Tournament as they stayed alive defeating Vanguard 1-0 in 11 innings in game one but fell in the championship game 3-1 on Wednesday evening at the OC Great Park in Irvine, CA

Game 1:
Allie Puente (28-3) picked up the win throwing a complete game 11 inning shutout allowing just three hits while walking one and striking out 12. Emily Puente led the Royals offense going 2-for-5 with the walkoff hit.

Once again it was a pitcher's duel throughout as both Allie Puente and Brianna Williams went the distance. The Lions got a triple in the first as they threatened Allie came right back to strike out the next batter and end the threat. After that Puente shutdown the Lions as the Royals offense looked to get something started. The Royals had an opportunity in the seventh with a runner on second but a great throw on hit by Kassie Puente nailed Jaylyn Hernandez at the plate to keep the game scoreless.

In extras the first scoring opportunity came to the Royals in the top of the ninth as they put two on with one out and got a base hit but a great throw again this time from the Lions centerfielder gunned down Hannah Macias at the plate to keep the game scoreless. Meanwhile Allie continued to deal putting the Lions down in order in the 9th and the 10th. The Royals would finally break through in the top of the 11th. With a runner on first and two outs who else but last night's hero Emily Puente stepped to the plate and ripped an RBI double into the gap to put the Royals ahead 1-0.

That's all they would need as Allie worked her way around a two out double by the Lions getting the final batter to flyout to end the game as the Royals forced a second game for the GSAC Championship.

Game 2:
Olivia Candelas (6-6) took the loss pitching 4 2/3 innings allowing three runs on four hits while walking two and striking out one.

It was another classic pitcher's duel as the Royals looked to win the GSAC Championship this time turning to Candelas to start. It was the Lions though who broke through first after three scoreless innings with a three run home run to take a 3-0 lead in the fourth.

The Royals didn't give up though as they fought back in the bottom of the fifth. With one on two outs Alena De La Torre ripped a clutch RBI double into the left field corner to pull the Royals within 3-1. Meanwhile Allie Puente came in from the bullpen and held the Lions off the board the rest of the way.

The Royals continued to fight as they got a one out double in the sixth but were unable to cash in as they eventually fell 3-1.

The Royals will know have to wait and see it they are selected as one of the at large teams for the NAIA Championships. Tune into the NAIA YouTube page on Tuesday, May 9 at 2:00 PM to find out if the Royals make it.
