Great Pitching and Timely Hitting Lead Royals to Sweep of Firebirds

Encinitas, CA – The No. 19 Hope International University softball team (13-2) swept the University of Saint Katherine Firebirds as they won 5-2 and 2-0 on Tuesday evening on the road in Encinitas, CA.

Game 1:
Allie Puente (7-2) picked up the win throwing a complete game 8 innings allowing two runs, one earned on three hits while walking one and striking out 18. Emma McCraw and Arianna Coronado led the Royals offense driving in two runs each.

Allie shutdown the Firebirds striking out the first nine batters she faced as the game was scoreless through three innings. The Firebirds finally got a hit in the fourth inning but Allie cameback to strike out the next two batters as the game remained scoreless. The Royals looked to open the scoring in the top of the fifth but were unable to convert.

The Firebirds finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth with a home run to take a 1-0 lead. That lead didn't last long as the Royals got to work in the top of the sixth. After loading the bases the Royals would tie the game 1-1 on a sac fly by Samantha Villanueva but that's all they could get as the game headed to extra innings.

The Royals offense broke through in extra innings as McCraw launched a two run bomb to centerfield to put the Royals up 3-1. They weren't done though as they loaded the bases before Coronado delivered a two out two run single to center to increase the Royals lead to 5-1. Allie then shutdown the Firebirds allowing one run before striking out the final batter to seal a 5-2 win.

Game 2:
Grace Craig (6-0) picked up the win scattering six hits over 5 1/3 innings while walking one and striking out two. Allie picked up her second save pitching 1 2/3 innings allowing no hits while walking one and striking out four. Makenna Stuart led the Royals offense going 1-for-3 with one RBI.

It was a pitcher's duel throughout as neither team was able to generate many scoring opportunities. The Firebirds had the best chance in the bottom of the fourth as they put runners on second and third but Craig got out of the jam inducing a popout and a groundout to end the threat. The Royals had a chance in the top of the fifth but were unable to breakthrough as the game continued scoreless.

The Royals finally broke through in the top of the sixth as they took advantage of an error to make it 1-0. The Royals then doubled their lead as Stuart ripped an RBI single to centerfield to make it 2-0. Craig then ran into trouble in the bottom of the sixth but Allie came in for the five out save striking out the final three batters to seal a 2-0 win.

The Royals continue action at home as they host the La Sierra University Golden Eagles on Friday, February 16 in a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 AM at Bastanchury Park in Fullerton, CA.
