Puente One Hitter, Smith's Bat Leads Royals to Sweep of Buccaneers

Mesa, AZ – The No. 19 Hope International University softball team (8-1) swept a doubleheader against the Park Gilbert University Buccaneers winning the first game 4-0 before winning the second 9-1 in six innings on Thursday morning at AZ Athletic Grounds in Mesa, AZ.

Game 1:
Allie Puente (5-1) picked up the win as she threw a one hitter over seven innings while striking out thirteen. Alyssa Castaneda led the Royals offense driving in the go ahead run.

The Royals had a chance to open the scoring in the second inning as they loaded the bases with no outs but they were unable to cash in as the game remained scoreless. Allie meanwhile shut down the Buccanners as she struck out the side in the bottom half retiring the first 10 batters she faced. The Royals would then break through in the top of the fourth as they put together a two out rally. With runners on first and second Castaneda stepped to the plate as a pinch hitter and lined an RBI single into right field to make it 1-0. Ariana Coronado would then steal home with the Buccaneers trying to catch her sister stealing second but the Royals got the run across before the out as they took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth.

The Buccaneers finally managed a hit in the bottom of the fourth but Allie came right back to get the next two batters with a strikeout and a popout. The Royals then took advantage of an error in the top of the fifth as Emma McCraw hit a sac fly to make it 3-0. Allie then worked around an error in the bottom of the sixth with three punchouts while the Royals added another run in the seventh. This time it was Asia Chacon who came through with a two out RBI single to make it 4-0. Allie then put the Buccaneers down in order in the bottom half as the Royals won 4-0.

Game 2:
Grace Craig (2-0) picked up her second win tossing four innings while allowing one unearned run on three hits while walking one and striking out two. Jazzy Smith led the Royals offense going 2-for-2 with two RBIs.

The Buccaneers got on the board first as they took advantage of an error to make it 1-0. Craig came back to get the next two batters to limit the damage while the Royals offense answered in the top of the second as they took advantage of an error to tie it 1-1. Then Makenna Stuart ripped a two out RBI double to give the Royals a 3-1 lead.

Craig worked out of trouble in the bottom of the second while the Royals offense continued to score in the third. The Royals would load the bases with one out before Natalie Corrales delivered a fielder's choice to make it 4-1. McCraw would then score on a passed ball to make it 5-1 before Jazzy Smith brought home two more runs with a double to make it 7-1. Smith would then score later in the inning on a wild pitch to make it 8-1.

Craig then put down the Buccaneers in order in the bottom of the third while the Royals added to their lead in the top of the fourth as McCraw crushed her second home run of the year over the centerfield wall to make it 9-1. Ashlee Kean then came in to pitch the bottom of the fifth working around a one out double by inducing a line out double play to end the game as the Royals won 9-1 by mercy rule.

The Royals continue action in Arizona as they take on No. 1 Oregon Tech in a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 AM in Glendale, AZ. There will not be live coverage available for this event. Follow hiusoftball on Twitter for updates.
