Katrina Rodriguez Helps Lead Royals to GSAC Opening Split with the Spirit

Surprise, AZ – The No. 7  Hope International University softball team's (20-3, 1-1 GSAC) winning streak came to an end as they dropped the first game of their GSAC doubleheader 2-1 before taking the second 3-2 in 9 innings against OUAZ on Friday afternoon on the road in Suprise, AZ.

Game 1:
Allie Puente (12-3) took the loss pitching 8 innings allowing two runs, one earned on nine hits while striking out five. Samantha Villanueva led the offense going 1-for-3 with an RBI.

The Spirit threatened in the bottom of the first with a one out double but Puente came back with a groundout and a strikeout to end the threat. It was a pitcher's duel throughout as both teams threatened in the bottom of the fourth and top of the fifth but neither team was able to breakthrough as the game remained scoreless.

The Royals would finally break the deadlock in the top of the sixth as Ariana Coronado led things off with an RBI single. Coronado moved over to second before Villanueva stepped up to the plate and lined a clutch two out RBI single to centerfield to put the Royals up 1-0. The Spirit though fought back to tie it with a home run in the bottom of the seventh to make it 1-1.

The Royals had the first chance to score in extras with the international tie breaker but were unable to convert as the game remained 1-1. The Spirit would then walk it off in the bottom of the eighth as the Royals fell 2-1.

Game 2:
Grace Craig (7-0) picked up the win pitching 8 1/3 innings allowing two unearned runs on seven hits while striking out four. Katrina Rodriguez led the Royals offense going 1-for-3 with an RBI.

It was another pitcher's duel as the game was scoreless until the sixth inning. The Royals had a chance in the top of the fourth after a leadoff single by Asia Chacon but were unable to cash in as the game remained scoreless. Craig meanwhile continued to shutdown the Spirit through the first 5 innings.

The Royals offense then broke through in the top of the sixth as they took advantage of an error to take a 1-0 lead. The Spirit would quickly answer in the bottom half to tie the game 1-1. The game then headed to extra innings again as neither team could get a run in the seventh. The Royals would retake the lead in the top of the eighth as Alyssa Castaneda launched a one out double to center field to put the Royals back ahead 2-1. Once again though the Spirit scratched across a run to tie it 2-2.

The Royals looked to take the lead back in the ninth and they did so as Rodriguez ripped a one out RBI double into left field to put the Royals back ahead 3-2. The Spirit looked to tie it in the bottom of the ninth but Allie Puente came in from the bullpen to get back to back strikeouts with the tying run on third to seal a 3-2 win.

The Royals continue their Arizona road trip as they head to nearby Glendale for a doubleheader against Arizona Christian beginning at 11:00 AM PT.
