Allie Puente Leads Royals to GSAC Split With Firestorm

Glendale, AZ – The No. 7  Hope International University softball team (21-4, 2-2 GSAC) split their second GSAC doubleheader of the season as they won the first game 2-1 before falling 6-0 in game two against Arizona Christian on Saturday afternoon on the road in Glendale, AZ.

Game 1:
Allie Puente (13-3) picked up the win pitching a complete game 7 innings allowing one run on six hits while walking one and striking out five. Katrina Rodriguez led the offense going 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Puente cruised through the first two innings putting the Firestorm down in order but then ran into trouble in the third as they loaded the bases with two down. Puente held strong as she got a groundout to end the threat and keep the game scoreless. The Royals would then take the lead in the top of the fourth as Jazzy Smith delivered a clutch one out RBI single to make it 1-0. Rodriguez then followed with a single up the middle to increase the Royals lead to 2-0.

Puente continued to hold the Firestorm at bay until the bottom of the sixth as they made it 2-1 but that's all she would allow as she got a popout and a strikeout to end the inning. The Firestorm threatened again in the bottom of the seventh with a one out double but Puente held strong getting a strikeout and flyout to end the game and seal a 2-1 win.

Game 2:
Allie Puente (13-4) took the loss pitching two innings while allowing three on four hits while walking one. Arely Coronado led the Royals offense going 2-for-3.

The Firestorm jumped on top early as they took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. The Royals looked to answer in the top of the second with a one out single by Rodriguez but were unable to cash in as they continued to trail. The Firestorm then added to their lead with two runs in the bottom of the third and another in the bottom of the fourth to go up 6-0.

The Royals continued to battle as Arely Coronado got a lead off single to start the top of the fifth. Makenna Stuart then walked to put runners on first and second with nobody out but the Royals were unable to capitalize as they continued to trail. Sarah Reisler pitched the final 2 1/3 innings for the Royals allowing no hits while striking out one but the Royals offense continued to be silent as the Royals fell 6-0.
