Royals Fall to Spirit on Senior Day

Fullerton, CA - The No. 14 Hope International University softball team (32-13, 10-10 GSAC) dropped their final GSAC doubleheader of the season falling 2-0 and 8-6 in 9 innings on Saturday afternoon at home at Bastanchury Park in Fullerton, CA on Senior day 

Game 1:
Allie Puente (22-9) took the loss throwing a complete game 7 innings allowing two runs on four hits while walking four and striking out 9. Asia Chacon and Arely Coronado both went 2-for-3 to lead the offense.

It was a pitcher's duel through the first four innings with the Royals having a great scoring opportunity in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs and a runner on second Chacon ripped a single to left but the Royals runner was thrown out at home trying to score to end the inning. The Spirit then struck with two outs in the top of the fifth to take a 2-0 lead.

The Royals tried to fight back in the bottom of the sixth as they put runner on first and second with nobody out but were unable to convert as they continued to trail. The Royals had one last chance in the bottom of the seventh as Coronado got a two out single but the Royals were unable to do anything as they fell 2-0.

Game 2:
Grace Craig got the start pitching  6 innings allowing five runs on six hits while walking three and striking out one. Allie Puente (22-10) took the loss in relief allowing three runs, one earned on one hit while walking one and striking out four. McCraw led the Royals offense going 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs.

The Royals took the lead in the bottom of the first as McCraw ripped a two out RBI single to right field to make it 1-0. The Spirit answered in the top of the third to take a 2-1 lead. The Spirit then struck for three runs in the top of the fifth to increase their lead to 5-1. The Royals didn't give up as they battled back in the bottom of the fifth. McCraw would come through with a one out RBI single to make it 5-2. The Royals then loaded the bases with two outs for Natalie Corrales who delivered a two run single to pull the Royals within 5-4. Makenna Stuart then followed with an RBI single up the middle to tie the game 5-5.

Both teams then searched for the go ahead run as they loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the sixth but were unable to convert as the game remained tied. Neither team was able to score another run in regulation as the game headed to extra innings. The Spirit would strike first in the top of the eighth on a wild pitch to take a 6-5 lead but the Royals would answer on a sac fly by McCraw to tie the game 6-6. The Spirit would then retake the lead with two outs in the top of the ninth as the Royals trailed 8-6. The Royals looked to extend the game in the bottom of the ninth but were unable to score as they fell 8-6.
 
The Royals wrap up regular season action on the road as they head to Irvine, CA to take on Westcliff on Friday, April 26 at 2:00 PM at the OC Great Park.
