Puente Gem Leads Royals in Regular Season Finale Victory

Irvine, CA - The No. 14 Hope International University softball team (33-13) wrapped up regular season play with a 6-4 victory over the Westcliff University Warriors on Friday afternoon at the OC Great Park in Irvine, CA in preparation for the GSAC Tournament.

Allie Puente (23-10) recovered from a string of uncharacteristic performances as she picked up the win pitching 5 no hit innings while walking two and striking out 10. Asia Chacon and Samantha Villanueva both drove in two runs to lead the offense.

It was a pitcher's duel early on as Puente was flawless striking out eight of the first nine hitters she faced until an error allowed a runner to reach base. The Royals meanwhile took the lead in the top of the fourth as Emma McCraw led off with a double. Two batters later Alyssa Castaneda came through with a clutch RBI single to left to put the Royals up 1-0.

Puente meanwhile continued to deal shutting down the Warriors in the bottom of the fourth while the Royals struck for a big inning in the top of the fifth. The Royals would put runners on second and third with nobody out before Asia Chacon ripped a two run double to right center to increase the Royals lead to 3-0. Three batters later Samantha Villanueva launched a booming triple to right center to plate two more runs and push the Royals lead to 5-0.

Grace Craig then came in to pitch the final two innings while the Royals added to their lead in the top of the seventh as Ariana Coronado forced an error to make it 6-0. The Warriors didn't give up as they got to Craig in the bottom of the seventh pushing across four runs to make it 6-4 but Craig held strong getting a flyout to end the game and seal a 6-4 win.

The third seeded Royals open up GSAC Tournament play against the second seeded Vanguard University Lions on Monday, April 29 at 3:00 PM at the OC Great Park Softball Stadium in Irvine, CA.
