Royals Secure Fourth GSAC Regular Season Championship

Fullerton, CA - The No. 18 Hope International University softball team (33-9, 16-4 GSAC) won their fourth GSAC Regular Season Championship as they completed a four game GSAC series sweep against the Benedictine Mesa Redhawks winning 6-1 and 7-0 on Saturday afternoon at Fullerton College in Fullerton, CA.

Game 1:
Kaitlyn Maaske (16-3) got the start and picked up her sixteenth win throwing a complete game 7 innings allowing just one unearned run on three hits while walking one and striking out five. Asia Chacon led the Royals offense going 1-for-3 with 3 RBIs and a home run.

The Royals jumped on top in the bottom of the first as Emma McCraw ripped an RBI single to right with nobody out to put the Royals up 1-0. Then with two outs Breanna Lucero delivered an RBI single past the first baseman to increase the Royals lead to 2-0. The Royals then tacked on two more in the bottom of the second as Vivian Litte came through with an RBI infield single before an error would score another run as the Royals took a 4-0 lead.

The Redhawks looked for an answer as Maaske was masterful to start putting down the first eight hitters she faced before the Redhawks eventually broke through with a run in the top of the sixth to make it 4-1. The Royals answered in the bottom of the sixth as Chacon blasted her team leading third home run to increase the Royals lead to 6-1. Maaske then finished off the Redhawks in order in the top of the seventh as the Royals won 6-1.

Game 2:
Alexis Galvan (9-6) picked up her ninth win as she threw a complete game 7 inning shutout allowing just four hits while striking out two. Sarah Reisler led the Royals offense going 2-for-2 with an RBI. Little led the Royals offense going 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the second when the Royals broke the game open with two outs. Lily Hernandez got things started by launching an RBI triple to right field to give the Royals a 1-0 lead. Makenna Stuart then ripped an RBI double down the left field line to make it 2-0. Two batters later Little unleashed a two run double to left field to give the Royals a 4-0 lead. McCraw then ripped an RBI single up the middle as the Royals took a commanding 5-0 lead.

That's all the run support Galvan would need as she allowed just two hits over the final five innings completely shutting down the Redhawks. The Royals would then tack on two more runs both with two outs as Little delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to make it 6-0. Alyssa Castaneda then drove in another run on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the sixth as the Royals went on to win 7-0.

The Royals continue action on the road as they travel to Irvine, CA for a doubleheader against Westcliff on Thursday, April 17 at 4:00 PM. The Royals will also be the No. 1 seed in the GSAC Championships which will be hosted by Embry-Riddle (AZ) in Prescott, AZ from April 29-May 1.
